It’s a rare and special thing in the art world. A relationship with an artist and a gallery that stands the test of time. For Dan Baldwin and Enter Gallery, it’s been 20 years. A partnership which has been important for both and which each continues to celebrate.
Back in 2004 in Brighton, a young Dan Baldwin was just starting to make a name for himself. Experimenting with bold, symbolic paintings and innovative printmaking techniques. At the same time, Enter Gallery, then known as Art Republic, was establishing itself. Soon to become one of the leading art spaces in the city.

Colour Palette
Enter Gallery’s CEO Lawrence Alkin recalls first seeing Dan’s art at a pop up exhibition in Brighton. Immediately struck by the the work it seemed like serendipity when the artist himself walked into the gallery shortly after. “It was always his colour palette that amazed me,” Lawrence says. “No matter how dark the subject matter, his colours made it beautiful.”

Early Vision
For Dan, Enter Gallery provided a crucial platform to showcase his evolving artistic vision. “There weren’t many galleries in Brighton at the time,” he remembers. “Enter was the first place I could really try to get my work out there.” What followed was the start of a fruitful, 20-year partnership.

Creative Process
Dan’s creative process even now begins with an intuitive, expressive exploration of colour. “I just get obsessed with colour” he says. It’s often the first thing that can come to mind. Waking up and finding a need to sketch. To try out combinations. It’s something that even now sits at the heart of everything.

Symbology
Symbology has found itself to be recurrently consistent in Dan’s work. Early on Dan’s paintings and prints were laden with overt symbolic imagery. Images such as dollar bills, crucifixes, razor blades and hand grenades. Elements which were used to delve into weighty themes of mortality, vulnerability, and the precarious nature of human existence. “There was this perilous edge, this tension between factors,” Dan reflects.

Evolution
Over the years, Dan’s style has evolved, but the power of symbolism remains central to his work. The imagery has become more subtle and metaphorical, with animals and natural elements serving as stand-ins for the human condition. Yet there is still an undercurrent of darkness and danger woven into the compositions. It creates what Dan describes as a “psychological landscape.” A marriage of expressive colour and symbolism that has become the foundation of Dan’s distinctive voice.
Enter Gallery
Through it all, Enter Gallery has been there. Supporting Dan’s creative journey and helping to introduce his work to an ever-growing audience. “There’s this great team at Enter. This mutual respect, and we’ve worked together on so many projects. It’s that solid backbone that’s been so important, especially in tougher times for the industry.”

Mutual Respect
That bond between artist and gallery has been crucial in weathering the ups and downs of the art world. As Lawrence notes, Enter Gallery’s commitment to the basics has been a key part of this. Paying bills on time and providing holistic support, from logistics to framing. It’s all helped foster that loyalty. “We’ve always had somebody working on the management side, advising artists and helping them along,” he explains. It’s a partnership built on trust, respect and a shared passion for creating and championing exceptional art and artists.

Dan Baldwin and Lawrence Alkin were interviewed at a live podcast recording for ‘Art Related Noise‘ in Brighton’s Beach House. The event was a celebration of a 20 year working partnership. On 5 December 2024 the exhibition ‘Dan Baldwin x Enter Gallery 20 years‘ will also be shown at Enter Gallery.
