The 7th edition of the popular Parees Fest has returned to Oviedo. A further three large scale murals have been added to the city. They join over 40 murals already created from previous editions in the Asturian capital.

Parees Fest 7th Edition Artists
This years artists were Maria Pena aka Mapecoo and Marat ‘Morik’ Danilyan. Working with the local community they were very much partners in the creative process. The result being art that re-enforces the idea of local identity. The idea of enabling a cultural legacy being at the very heart of the process.

Traditional Crafts
Traditional symbols such as Faro pottery, clogs and the apple are all featured in the latest murals. All have deep links to the local area. They are supportive of other Parees Fest murals in Oviedo which also play into the theme of identity and culture.

Window to the Past, Projection to the Future
“Parees is not just an encounter with urban art. It is a celebration of our roots” said the festival director Eduard Crespo. “A window to the past and a projection towards the future of Austurias”. In each of the murals there has been what Parees Fest describes as a process of ‘artistic mediation’. A process that involves the community in their ultimate design.

Another piece next to the Faro mural is Marat Morik’s tribute to the Madreña. Another symbol of Asturian craftmanship they are a unique form of clog. The mural celebrates the Madreñera trade. One that has a legacy in the Asturian region but one that is at risk due to generational change.
