A huge Pink Bear lounging on a sunchair and eating an ice-cream has appeared in Cleethorpes. Created by Paul Robinson, an artist better known as LUAP. He is known for his depiction of the bear which acts as both a muse and alter-ego.

Pink Bear in Cleethorpes
Growing up in the area of Cleethorpes and Grimsby, LUAP describes the mural as especially nostalgic. Now based in London, he very much keeps his connection to the area. The mural he says is about remembering joyful moments like spending time on the beach in those childhood days.

Dig My Sandy Grave Whilst I Eat This Melting Ice-Cream
Titled ‘Dig My Sandy Grave Whilst I Eat This Melting Ice-Cream”. He says that it is a reminder to cherish those times as they can often feel fleeting. The Bear, acting as an alter-ego of sorts as well as a muse, has itself evolved from a childhood memory.

Positive Memory
That memory came as a result of CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. A positive image that he clung onto whilst working on his own mental health. Since then, LUAP’s work has featured the bear. Initially acting as a means to help work through his own thoughts. The bear has evolved and keeps evolving. Mental Health advocacy always still at the heart of much of his work.

Giant Mural in Cleethorpes
At a whopping 22m x 4m, the Pink Bear mural in Cleethorpes is the largest LUAP has painted to date. Normally known as a studio artist, his murals nevertheless are sought after. His most recent image of the bear on a wall in Shoreditch soon becoming a fan favourite. That piece entitled ‘Hope‘ featured the bear slumped on a bleacher holding onto a bouquet of droopy flowers.

Happy Memory
Eating an ice-cream on Cleethorpes Beach it drips onto the Pink Bears hand. It is a metaphor for time passing. The bear though is content. The cone is dripping but the time is special. In the background Cleethorpes Pier stands proudly. A familiar backdrop and a positive memory of relaxing days.

The Pink Bear mural by LUAP was painted during August 2024 in Cleethorpes, England. It has been supported by ‘Paint the Town Proud’. A community initiative. It works with partners across the area. They create artworks which the public can enjoy and engage with. A big thanks to LUAP for the use of images in this article.
