Meeting of Styles 2017 returns to the Nomadic Community Gardens in Shoreditch
The first big street art festival of the year, the Meeting of Styles, took place over the first weekend of July in a location which has become well known to the event, the Nomadic Community Gardens.
We’ve covered this event for the past few years now and each time it gets a little bit more ambitious. The main wall of the gardens, a giant flat faced surface propping up the arch of an old railway access route, has become known for the elaborate murals which get painted by multiple artists at each event.
This time the centrepiece saw a collaborative effort from co-organiser Jim Vision as well as writers Balstroem, Neist, Xenz, Tweshone and Dr Zadok. The resulting scene mixes fantastical imagery with elaborate graffiti writing surrounded by an intricate border. It’s an impressive piece and one that will have pride of place next to the railway line at least until the event next year.
Elsewhere in the gardens there was a mixture of works being created not only inside but out as well. Normally the walls around the space are off limits but for this event they were well and truly broken in. In fact the whole section of path otherwise known as Pedley Street got pretty much painted over.
The gardens have become a popular destination over recent years and we’ve featured the place a couple of times in the blog. Formerly a disused and abandoned railway siding it has been lent by network rail to provide a community space until such time it gets redeveloped at least.
A suprising find for people stumbling across it around the back of Brick Lane. The gardens are the result of a combination of local community allotment growing, street art and a makeshift shanty town made out of found materials. It’s a pretty unique space.
Back to the event though and in addition to the action main wall a host of London’s local talent were on display. The likes of Fanakapan, the real dill, Roo, Captain Kris, Ed Hicks, Candie, Perspicere, Orbit, Tizer and Stedhead are well known to regular readers of this blog and it’s always good to see their work alongside the rest of the great and good of the London street art scene.
