‘In Depth’ is a showcase of street art sculpture at the Unit 5 Gallery. On Hackney Road it has brought together some of the world’s best street artists who have showcased their works in 3D.
Now we like a bit of sculpture at Inspiring City. We’ve even done a tour of some of London’s best abstract pieces which you can follow here. Street art sculpture though is not new. The likes of Jonesy, Mark McClure, Citizen Kane, Ronzo and Mobstr are past masters of the art. Indeed all those feature in the latest show at the Unit 5. In the case of Jonesy and Mark McClure, they have also featured in Inspiring City interviews about their work.
We’ve covered shows at the Unit 5 Gallery before too. In fact the last time we visited the gallery it was when the space was first opened last year. The home of ‘Alternative London’. They have been responsible for many a mural over the years. Certainly they are well placed in terms of convincing some of the best artists around to lend their skills to put on a show like this.
Sculpture really is an important part of the street art scene. It’s good to see a show that brings work in this particular medium together and there are some interesting pieces with some interesting stories and in some cases local connections. Jimmy C’s portrait on cardboard boxes is of a local man who has lived in the area for 50 years whilst Jo Peel’s tree installation uses wood from the nearby Hackney City Farm.
The show ‘In Depth’ runs until 26 February 2017 and the gallery can be found in ‘The Yard’ on Yorkton Street just off the Hackney Road.
