American Muralist Beau Stanton paints Pedley Street in London

In a weekend which saw a lot of artists descend upon the Brick Lane area, American muralist Beau Stanton added his mark to the regularly painted spot on Pedley Street.

Fresh from a tour of Europe which took in painting gigs in Rome and Spain, the New York native took the opportunity to paint a spot which is one of the most photographed in the capital when it comes to Street Art, Pedley Street just off from Brick Lane.

Describing himself as “an artist creating murals in the old tradition” he told Inspiring City that, other than the fact he paints on the street, he doesn’t consider himself a street artist. “The term I have difficulty with. I make paintings and I like to create murals, that’s what I do” Beau said.

Using rollers to complete the background, the majority of Beaus work is completed using brushes and house paint. Not a spray can in sight and the mural is distinctive because of it. Watching him work on a wall which is, at an educated guess the best part of 20 x 10ft, and using a tiny brush is quite impressive especially as the whole thing has only taken two days. He told me that he did have a variety of different sizes of brush… but still!

The end result, a sinking ship riding against the waves made up from symbols and designs from Beaus imagination, is striking. In the sky, three eyes demonstrate the sequence of closing as the ship struggles against the waves. “I was thinking about the idea or cycles and things coming to an end” he told me.

Next up a return to New York and a few more murals but for now let’s take a look at the latest addition to the East End canvas.
