A Collective Creative Process

Participants include ESOL learners, members of Ipswich Community Media’s Integration team and young people from the South Street Kids project. They worked with ATMA to share ideas based on their journeys to Ipswich. These ideas shaped the mural’s main image of two hands offering a burst of flowers and colour. The symbol reflects generosity, growth and shared roots.

ATMA says the project shows how public art can build stronger communities. ‘Art Eat Events‘ director Iona Hodgson said that the work highlights the value of diversity at a time of divided public debate.

Part of a Wider Community Hub

The painting phase took place in late November. It links with the launch of Roots, a new community café at Westgate House. It’s a place that will offer a welcoming space for people from all backgrounds. Both projects supporting the regeneration of the building as a centre for learning and connection.

Local Support and Lasting Impact

Local businesses have also backed the project. Novotel Ipswich has provided accommodation for the visiting artist. Johnstone’s Paint has supplied materials and specialist paints at a reduced cost. The mural will become a lasting landmark. One that celebrates unity, creativity and the diverse communities that shape modern Ipswich.
