Lucy Sparrow Opens ‘The Bourdon Street Chippy’

Acclaimed British artist Lucy Sparrow returns to London with her newest immersive installation. A hand-stitched fish and chip shop. This is Sparrow’s first UK exhibition since 2021’s Bourdon Street Chemist, also hosted by the Lyndsey Ingram Gallery.

Felt Artist

The artist is known worldwide for recreating familiar places using felt. From supermarkets to New York corner stores. Her installations are rich in detail, humour and sentiment. Offering visitors a unique, playful experience that blurs the lines between art and theatre.

Bourdon Street Chippy

Inside The Bourdon Street Chippy, visitors will step into a full-size replica of a traditional British fish and chip shop. Everything is made from felt. From battered cod to mushy peas, salt sachets to vinegar bottles. You can place your order at the counter and sit on soft, hand-stitched seating while soaking up the details.

Handcrafted Felt

Over 65,000 individual felt pieces make up the installation, each handcrafted by Sparrow herself. Even the chips come in 15 distinct shapes and five golden shades. It’s a testament to her signature attention to detail. The walls feature sewn menus, vintage-style signage, and portraits of fictional celebrities who once “visited” the chippy.

Art, Nostalgia and Personal Reflection

Lucy Sparrow’s work has always explored the relationship between comfort, memory and everyday life. This exhibition also carries a deeper, personal message from the artist. She explains:

“My complicated relationship with food has always informed my art. The two are inextricably linked… I realised my art practice had become a coping mechanism to mask difficult emotions. It has sustained me and given me motivation to stay well in order to keep sharing it with the world.”

Lyndsey Ingram, the gallery’s founder, adds:

“Lucy is one of the most important and meaningful artists of her generation. We’re proud to welcome her back to Bourdon Street with another extraordinary felt creation.”
