Street Artists Paint Containers at Pop Brixton

Brixton sure is changing. Pop Brixton is the latest BoxPark to hit the city is just another symbol of that change. Built on reclaimed land and made up of shipping containers, the park itself is not permanent. It will also soon fall victim to a more permanent structure. However it will be a good few years until that happens. Until such time it looks set to become the go to area of the town.

The containers themselves, at one time to be found travelling the high seas, now play host to a number of exotic eateries, bars and coffee shops. There’s also exhibition spaces and the intention is to eventually expand even more and build an event space.

Brixton Arches

Of course the changes happening in Brixton at the moment are bitter sweet. Pop Brixton sits next to the Brixton Arches. The residents there are faced with eviction as Network Rail seek to redevelop the area further. Some of the tenants currently making a living from the arches have been there for many years. Should the evictions go ahead they will need to re-evaluate what to do next.

Street art of course has played a big part in drawing attention to the plight of the tenants. They’ve now become an outdoor art gallery in themselves. Walk around when the shutters are down and you’ll see some of London’s finest street art talent on display. Pop Brixton has picked up on the arty vibe. The plan is to eventually paint as many of the shipping containers as possible. Brixton, it would seem, is loving the street art.

And that, of course is what interests us here on Inspiring City! The fact that the likes of Mutiny, Giusi Tomasello, Azarro Amoy and Frankie Strand have already painted in the park is appealing. Combine that with the promise of more outdoor art to come. This from the likes of Brazilian artist Deco and Spanish artist Elno. We thought we might be in for a bit of a treat.

So, to see what was going on, get a flavour of the action taking place and of course to see some of our favourite artists in action. Inspiring City travelled down to Brixton to get some pictures and a feel for what promises to become one of the coolest spots in town.

Pop Brixton opened on 29 May 2015 and was visiting by Inspiring City over the weekend of 13/14 June 2015. It is open from 9am to 11pm on most days of the week.
